The research ‘The Other Side of the Medal: Major sporting events in Brazil in the web of urban planning, speculation and the right to the city” was conducted by Dawid Danilo Bartelt and published by the Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung Foundation.
The author analyzes in detail the impact of the World Cup and the Summer Olympics on Brazil’s economy and populaion. Illustrating by this research how Mega Sporting Events have established themselves as a business model.
Among the main findings from the research :
The football World Cup in Brazil costs the country at least €8.5 billion euros but did not stimulate economic growth. The social costs, by contrast, were high. Various estimates put the number of people displaced or threatened by eviction at up to a quarter million.
Is shows also that Brazilian authorities are repeating the same mistakes with the Summer Olympics :
The vulnerable population is being displaced from districts that are being made more attractive to entrepreneurs in order to attract investors in Rio. The Olympic Games exacerbate social inequalities by displacing, excluding and violating the rights of the local people. A process that started in the run-up to the World Cup is now continuing.
